During Weeks 3 and 4, we discussed the importance of place and the challenge of identity for Southern and Appalachian writers. Certainly, both of these issues manifest themselves in different ways for each author.

For this essay, discuss the short story or poem from our reading that most clearly represents and exemplifies the characteristics of Southern and/or Appalachian writing and focuses most on establishing identity.

As you research for this essay, consider the following questions:

• How does the author capture the essence of the Southern/Appalachian experience?

• Discuss how place is an important part of the piece?

• What are the central themes of the piece, and how do those themes help to establish identity?

Reminders and Format:

• 500-750 words (2-3 pages)

• MLA format

• Sources: ONE outside source is fine, but you MUST use the work in question. Also, please do not use the open web. use the APUS library to ensure the credibility of your sources.

• Avoid the use of first person (I, we, us) and second person (you). You MUST use at least one quote from the piece you are discussing.
