Your textbook focuses on third-party logistics providers (3PL), but there are actually many types of logistics providers (1PL, 2PL, 3PL, 4PL, and 5PL). The level of service and commitment increases as you move from a 1PL to a 5PL firm. Therefore, a company that is considering outsourcing its logistics must decide to what level it wants to turn over its supply chain to another firm.
