what do the Gospel writers reveal about the identity and mission of Jesus?

Description

Paper Prompt and Directions:

USE CATHOLIC BIBLE

Students are to compose a 3 page narrative analysis paper on one of the following passages in the Gospels. The paper is due on FRIDAY, 4/30. The purpose of this assignment is to answer the question,

what do the Gospel writers reveal about the identity and mission of Jesus? Pay particular attention to the Gospel writer’s use of the OT, either allusions or specific quotations.

Remember, this is not a book report merely describing the text, but using the details to formulate an argument of your own!

Students should therefore have a thesis statement with a position that they are arguing about the text. For example, “The Gospel of Matthew portrays Jesus as the perfect son of David and a New Moses.”

Students should give an analysis of the details of the text in order to support their thesis.

Papers are to be written in Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced, with standard margins. Papers should use Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian. Since this paper is an analysis of Scripture, students should frequently make use of citing Scripture throughout the paper as evidence to support the student’s thesis.

Texts: (Choose only one of the following)

• Gospel of Matthew (selections)

• Gospel of John (selections)

• One specific text within these Gospels. E.g. The genealogy in Matthew, or Prologue in John, woman at the well, etc.

• A comparison of a specific text between synoptic Gospels
