The monster in Shelley’s Frankenstein says, “I cannot believe that I am the same creature whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions of the beauty and the majesty of goodness. But it is even so, the fallen angel becomes a malignant devil.”
This passage highlights the overlooked components of humanity: it observes that all people are capable of acts of both sin and righteousness, and that even monstrous creatures desire to be loved. Is this so? Does this suggest that even Milton’s Satan is redeemable?
