Appendix 1: Assignment

There are three elements to the assessment of this 40 credit module: the placement & practice portfolio, and a 1,500 word written assignment. All elements must be passed in order to pass the module, however it is the written assignment which holds the academic grade contributing to the overall level of award.

Students must complete a 1,500 word Critical Incident Analysis (CIA) based on a practice incident from their final placement. This may be based on a situation from practice which has promoted learning, or has challenged the student’s values, knowledge or practice.

The Critical Incident Analysis should draw on the application of advanced knowledge of power, theory, policy and values. Students will also be required to include critical reflection on their learning and continued professional development.

The following module learning outcomes should be addressed:

5. Critically analyse the impact of differentials in power, and the use of authority, communicating conclusions clearly.

6. Critically evaluate professional values and principles underpinning social work, taking account of ethical and anti-discriminatory practice.

7. Employ advanced knowledge, and analytical skills to the application of relevant theories and knowledge to inform models and methods of social work intervention with individuals, families, groups and communities.
