An Industrial and Organizational psychologist studies humans’ minds and behaviors within the workplace and assist with employee-related problems which will eventually lead to a healthier work environment. They provide care, treatment, and training by using psychological principles and research methods to improve individuals’ physical and mental wellness, work performance, safety, communication, and professional satisfaction. An I/O psychologist may conduct research revolving ethics, work-life balance, team management, leadership, productive behavior, occupational stress, conflict management, motivation, diversity, discrimination, and sexual assault/harassment. According to the article, Industrial Psychologist Ranks Among Best Jobs of 2021, a master’s degree in I/O psychology is required to become an industrial psychologist, but a doctoral degree will assist an individual to more academic, research and scientific jobs.

After reading the introduction chapter, I was surprised that they are not only involved in improving hiring processes, but are hands-on in the hiring process within organizations. I was not aware that recruiting and selecting employees, designing job application forms, or even determining the salary and benefit package employees receive are a part of their tasks. According to the article, I/O Psychology: The Process of Employee Selection, methods used by I/O psychologists include review of job classification systems, incumbent interviews, supervisor interviews, expert panels, structured questionnaires, task inventories, check lists, open-ended questionnaires, observation, and incumbent work logs.
