Describe a time when you were concerned about the possible toxicological effects of a chemical. Unit II Journal
Go to the chemical classifications section of the ATSDR’s Toxic Substances Portal. Have you ever been exposed to one of these chemicals? If so, how did it happen? Did it cause any symptoms? If you have not, which chemical do you feel is the most dangerous that you would try to protect your friends and family from exposure? Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. Unit III Journal
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, many common household products are used for the purpose of getting high, especially by children and adolescents. Many of these chemicals include gases used as propellants. Based on your opinion, should we ban these chemicals and only deal with organic types of cleaners like mild soaps, lemon juice, etc.?

Unit III PowerPoint Presentation Toxicological Profile of Household Chemicals
Identify the top 8-10 chemicals in your household used for cleaning or for a hobby you might have. Differentiate these chemicals into different chemical classes to include organic and inorganic, and perform a review of the toxicological risk that they pose to you or your family.
Be sure to address the following items for each chemical in your presentation:
Predict the potential chemical and physical properties and how this chemical could react with other chemicals in your household.
Describe how intermolecular forces can influence the physical properties of each chemical. For each chemical, determine if the chemical is in a gaseous form.

Your presentation should be a minimum of 12 slides, not counting the title slide and the reference slide. You should have a minimum of one reference, which can be your textbook. Unit IV Journal
Identify a chemical reaction that you noticed firsthand, a precipitation, acid/base or oxidation/reduction reaction and discuss how it was controlled. This could be as simple as chemicals mixing in your household by accident, or the chemical reaction of fireworks being lit, etc. Explain which type of reaction you saw.

Unit IV Case Study West Fertilizer Company Fire and Explosion Investigation Report Review
Access the West Fertilizer Company Fire and Explosion Investigation Report. Review the key components of the investigation report (Note: you are not expected to read the entire report.
Review only what is needed to complete the case study. Refer to your required reading assignment for specific sections.) Write a minimum of two pages analyzing the following key concepts: Identify hazardous chemicals that could have caused the explosion.
Determine what type of chemical reaction took place, and identify if it was exothermic or endothermic in nature and if it was a precipitation, acid/base, or oxidation/reduction event.
Explain what measurement technique could be used to quantify the airborne hazard after the chemical reaction took place.
Your case study should have a title page and a reference page that do not count in the minimum two page count. You should have a minimum of one source (the report). Your case study should follow APA guidelines.
Unit V Journal
Identify a chemical in your home or office that is an inorganic chemical. What precautions would you take if this chemical spilled in your home or office? Consider people potentially exposed to the chemical, and think of preserving property and the environment. Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit V Annotated Bibliography
Using scholarly resources from the CSU Online Library, complete an annotated bibliography for the reference resources you will use for the Unit VII assignment, which involves responding to a hazardous materials incident. Make sure your paper has resources that identify the following areas:
Describe inorganic compounds and the chemical family they belong to as well as the hazards associated with that chemical family.
Describe what the chemical(s) are used for in the industrial setting. Assess the patterns of reactions within inorganic chemistry nomenclature.
Evaluate the methods that could be used to quantify the hazard at an incident site. Your annotated bibliography should meet all APA style requirements and should have a robust description of each source that is being used (approximately 150 words describing each reference).
You should have a minimum of five external sources, one of which can be your textbook. Each source used should be peer-reviewed or academic in nature. The creating an annotated bibliography tutorial will provide guidance if needed. T

In the assignment for this unit, you will create an outline in preparation for the report you will write in your assignment for Unit VII. In the scenario for the Unit VII assignment, you are a first responder who is responding to an incident that is a mass casualty event where a school bus carrying middle school children collided with two trucks. One track is carrying benzene, and the other truck is carrying ammonium nitrate. Both trucks have released their cargo via spill, and now the school students are in danger of breathing in the vapors. Complete an outline of how you will write the paper.
In your outline, make sure you have components that meet the following requirements: Distinguish between organic and inorganic chemicals. Apply chemical reaction basic precautions at the accident scene.
Describe potential reactions that may be present with the chemicals. Describe the families of hydrocarbons in terms of hazard. Explain the chemical characteristics of each chemical family. Outline the potential chemical reactions of hydrocarbons.

For this assignment, you will write a paper in response to the scenario described below. Be sure to use the sources from the annotated bibliography assignment in Unit V. You may also use additional sources as needed. Also, be sure to use the outline you created in the Unit VI assignment. Scenario: You are a first responder who is responding to an incident that is a mass casualty event where a school bus carrying middle school children collided with two trucks, one carrying benzene and the other carrying ammonium nitrate.
Both trucks have released their cargo via spill, and now the school students are in danger of breathing in the vapors. The incident happened on Highway 182 in Orange Beach, Alabama. It is the middle of July and the temperature is 89oF with sunny skies, and the winds are calm for now. Because it is summer, there are clouds building to the west with thunderstorms predicted in the next 90 minutes.
Compile a minimum of four pages to appropriately answer the following questions:
What form would you expect to find the chemicals (liquid, gas, solid, etc.)? Will this form change based on the weather? Which Department of Transportation (DOT) placards would be used to identify the different hazardous materials cargo?
How would the children on the school bus be best protected from the chemicals (e.g. evacuated, shelter in the bus, etc.)?
Describe the chemical reactions that may take place. Recommend the risk-based response steps you would take to control the hazardous materials event.

You are asked to perform a briefing to the mayor and her staff on the following situation below. Compose a minimum of ten slides to address the following situation: At approximately 9:15 pm, on the 11th of September in Orange Beach, Alabama (Temp 71oF, cloudy with calm winds), there is a 9-1-1 report that the movie theater in town that is packed to capacity to see the new adventure movie has had three explosions. The first explosion involved an explosion with a flash and loud bang resulting in a fine mist being released on the movie goers. As the movie goers were frantically leaving through the exits, two more explosions went off at each exit with another flash and loud bang but no physical shrapnel or other reports of physical damage to the theater. Several days ago, it was reported by the news that the mayor’s office received a threat of a terrorist organization planning on releasing a biological agent in the town. According to reports at the movie theater, four used canisters marked Yersinia pestis were found in the location of the secondary bombs. As you are traveling to the scene you hear reports of patrons convulsing in the parking lot of the theater; they are unable to control their muscles and other bodily functions and are twitching uncontrollably. Based on the cryptic details, what category of WMD weapon(s) was released on the crowd? What is the potential outcome of being exposed to these WMD agents? In what capacity will your organization of first responders be able to help (e.g. decontamination, weapon identification, first aid, etc.)? What risk-based response procedures need to be taken to stabilize the scene and prevent further exposure to the WMD agents?
