Part 2

Summative assignment
Word limit 2,500 words

For a manufacturing or service process of your choice (preferably one that belongs to the organisation you chose for the video) do the following:

A. Use relevant operations and technology management tools and techniques to describe it and explain how it supports the organisation’s operations strategy. [30 marks]

B. Apply relevant tools and techniques to explain how the process performs and evaluate whether it meets its operation’s objectives. [40 marks]

C. Provide recommendations on how it can be improved and explain any barriers that your recommendations may face. [30 marks]

Criteria for the organisation and process you select: The choice of both the process and the organisation in which it belongs is flexible and can relate to manufacturing or service contexts. However, it is preferred, but not required, that the process you select is a) one with which you have been involved in the past, and b) one that you have some reasonable data for. If you have no access, try to select a process for which either there is relevant data already available or which you are able to collect within the timescales of the assignment.

The process you select needs to be sufficiently complex to ensure that there is a detailed application of the relevant tools and techniques. Therefore, the process needs to

• have at least 10 activities,
• be important for the organisation’s strategy, but not necessarily core,
• be linked with other organisational processes, e.g. its output is the input to another process, and
• require relevant resources. Finally, please remember that you are asked to apply the above to a process, not to an organisation.

Marking guidelines
Performance in the summative assessment for this module is judged against the following criteria:
• Relevance to question
• Organisation structure and presentation
• Depth of understanding
• Analysis of discussion
• Use of sources and referencing
• Overall conclusions Your assignment should be well organised and structured, using headings and sub-headings as appropriate to indicate topics discussed. You should follow any instructions, for example to describe or to discuss. You should demonstrate an understanding of theory and literature and should show interpretation and application of this. All references must be clearly indicated, and a complete bibliography of all sources used must be included. use the Harvard style referencing, as described in cite them right online.

Very occasionally it may be appropriate to present, in an appendix, material which does not properly belong in the main body of the assessment but which some students wish to provide for the sake of completeness. Any appendices will not have a role in the assessment – the examiners are under no obligation to read appendices and they do not form part of the word count. Please note that your assignment and any appendices must all form part of the same electronic document, since only one file can be submitted.
