The film also indicates trauma is not always in the form of physical injury. It is the emotional “hurt” of events that occur. It is being alone with the hurt, feeling that you are on your own. What are some reasons a parent/care-giver may not be emotionally available for a child (or adult for that matter)?

As a child we have 2 fundamental needs (1) Attachment and (2) Authenticity. What happens to the child/person who has to suppress their gut feelings in order to survive (adapt?) in their environment?

Mate indicates the basis of addiction is trauma. He asks NOT “Why did the addiction develop?” but “Why did the pain develop?”. Why do people who may be traumatized turn to drugs and alcohol?

Mate suggests we do not understand addiction and therefore treatment is not getting to the core reason addiction develops. He suggests drug/alcohol use is a solution to a person’s problem. What are some problems people are looking to solve for themselves?

Society is filled with collective trauma. There are some traumas that can be applied to a whole population. They are connected by the trauma. What is at least one society-related trauma you recognize?

What is your opinion on the use of psychidelic substances for the treatment of trauma (and other mental health conditions)?
