If there’s a differential between claims and evidence presented for the sides, why? Was it harder to find information on one? Does one side make more limited claims or offer more limited support?

ENGL 110
Revision Exercise 2: Highlighting Claims and Support

Highlighting

Follow the directions below to revise a section of your essay. Attach the original and revision (clearly marked as such) when you submit this assignment; make sure you answer the questions at the end as well. I’ve provided text boxes after each question for you to do that.

1. Look at your draft of Section 2. You’ll use a total of 4 colors to do the next step: highlight the draft, using one color to mark the claims of Side 1, and a 2nd to mark any passages that support that claim (look for examples, statistics, anecdotes, case studies, expert opinions, etc.) Use colors 3 and 4 to do the same for Side 2 – claims in one color, support highlighted in another.

2. Compare the highlighted claims for Side 1 and Side 2: do you have more claims for one side than for another? If so, which side did you present in greater depth?

3. Compare the highlighted areas of support for Side 1 and Side 2. Are they balanced, or does one side have more support than another?

4. If there’s a differential between claims and evidence presented for the sides, why? Was it harder to find information on one? Does one side make more limited claims or offer more limited support?

5. What changes, if any, do you need to make to this section to provide a balanced view of each side?

6. After making any needed changes, how do you feel about the section now?
