Write an essay of approximately 1,500 words addressed to incoming first year students; advance an argument for the importance of cultivating empathy to enhance the experience of higher education.

You must use AT LEAST one quotation from our course reading. You may choose to focus on a single philosophical figure/position or instead offer insights from multiple figures/systems of thought. In either case make sure that your explication of the course content offers enough depth and detail to clearly evidence your understanding of it.

Any outside sources used must be cited parenthetically or with footnoted as well as in a References section at the end of the essay. You may use whichever citation style you prefer.

While not required, I strongly advise you to focus on a figure/position from the second half of the term. Writing on material from before midterm is acceptable, but your work will be assessed by a higher standard.
If you would like to write a different format of the essay, you may submit your idea via email for my approvalā€”unapproved essays will incur a grading penalty.

You will be graded on the strength of your argument, your demonstrated understanding of the material, and the overall quality of writing; be sure to edit your work carefully
