Low Vision in Ophthalmic Practice Summative Assessment

Title: A critical analysis and evidence-based case study to discuss the long term management and support for a patient living with Low Vision.

SUGGESTED ESSAY STRUCTURE

(Titles for each section should not be used; this essay should be continuous prose)

• Introduction. Provide a clear structure for the essay. Explain what the essay will cover and in which order.

• A critical analysis must then take place, evaluating the care in place for low vision patients. Consider:
 Who are the practitioners/professionals involved in a low vision patient’s care? E.g. optoms, DOs, care groups, GPs, low vision practitioners, occupational health, social services.
 What roles do these professionals have?
 How often do they have an input?
 How do the professionals work together to deliver care?
 Is there a specific care pathway?
 How/where is care provided?
 What input does the patient have?

As this essay is a critical analysis, you must discuss the efficacy of each stage of patient care. Are there different systems/approaches, and how do they compare?

You can focus this essay on a specific condition if this is easier.

Remember you are writing at level 6, you need to support your statements with primary and secondary evidence. The evidence needs to be peer reviewed, and consider its position in Maslow’s hierarchy of evidence.

• Conclusion. State the conclusions that have been drawn from the evidence presented – do not make this just descriptive. No new findings should be presented here.

References are required for all statements. Forming a true academic discussion, with the most contemporary, reliable and credible, relevant sources, is the key to achieving distinction grades. If a source discusses, let us say, an approach to patientcentred care, are there other sources that support their thinking/research? Or, are there other researchers that disagree?
