How is your department affected by factors in the external environment outside of your organization or institution?

What are the national policies, regulations, standards, and professional scopes of work that organizations and employees must adhere to?

My department is impacted by government funding for mental health both nationally, by the state and locally: all have decreased in the past two years. As the largest system in the state we have two disproportionate share hospitals. The volume of patients has increased significantly as people delayed care now are coming in. Through-put is effected by availability of inpatient beds, community resources and insurance. National patient safety goals, professional standards as set by American Nurses Association, scope of practice as defined by licensure and evidence based practice form our practice. Employees must adhere to Standards of Professional Behavior based in the Mission/Vision/Values of YNHHS.

Mission and vision for their role: what is your mission and vision for your department?

The mission is to provide innovative and excellent patient care. The vision is to enhance the lives of people we serve by providing access to high-value patient centered care.

What are some of the challenges you face in recruiting and retaining staff in your department?
My department is a hybrid of emergency and psychiatry therefore candidates who will make successful employees need to have some skill in both areas which is not common. Retention is a new problem with staff retiring and leaving for positions outside of acute healthcare which is a downstream consequence of the COVID pandemic.
