Scenario/ Learning Disability Nursing
Gladys is a 55-year-old female, who lives in Newham, London. She was born in the UK. Gladys used to enjoy Bingo twice a week but has stopped going since her husband died 5 years ago. She now lives alone in a bungalow. She has one niece, who lives 50 miles away.
Gladys has a diagnosis of a mild learning disability. Her niece has noticed when talking to her that she has been suffering from memory loss and has requested on Gladys’ behalf a dementia screening assessment with the local learning disability team. Gladys is not engaging with the health services for this assessment and there are concerns that Gladys has started to ‘see’ images of her late husband, which she has communicated to her niece when they speak.
Gladys receives some social benefits and is fearful about going out because of the high incidence of COVID-19 in the area of London and not feeling secure without her husband or niece with her. Her niece is unable to visit her due to the distance between them but will complete her food shopping online for her and get this delivered directly to Gladys home.

Critical Writing Example:
Marks (2014) states that communication is important in nursing because it helps patients trust us. It is important that patients trust nurses as this helps develop a therapeutic relationship. A therapeutic relationship increasing the concordance of a patient taking their medication correctly (Mosby, 2009). However, Mishlisk (2010) argues that nurses today do not have the time to communicate effectively. This is supported by Nobu (2013) in those complaints from patients are commonly related to communication issues. The case study focused on in this essay demonstrated this in that by not taking the time to communicate effectively inhibited the patients understanding of their inhaler technique.
